The Johari window1, I learned about this on a video of SmarterEveryDay2.

Quadrants
Arena
Public stuff, man in the arena
Façade
- Hidden area
- The truth you’re withholding
- Not ready for people to know
- Secrets
- Don’t want people to know
Blind Spot
- What the word says.
Unknown
- Unknown unknowns?
Why is it valuable?
Quoting/paraphrasing from the video:
- It forces us to confront the reality that our knowledge of ourselves is not perfect
- It forces us to recognize that people notices things about ourselves that are true, that we are not aware of.
These are essential to our growth and development and our movement through life. We have to be open and available to reality that we are still learning who we are. And that others might have insight into who we are. The awareness changes the dynamic of relationships. Self awareness impacts the health of our relationships.
No man is an island.
To expand the arena and increase self-awareness
- Into the Facade, you have to be vulnerable and open up.
- Into the Blind spot, you have to have a trusting relationship to ask and receive feedback.
- Into the Unknown, you have to explore or meditate or experiment with new things and observe how it affects you and become more aware. Be curious.
What do I think about it?
I understand the dynamic and how self awareness can impact relationships. How you can choose to change things about yourself or to learn new behaviors and almost always these changes start from awareness, I quite like how the quadrant could be an interesting tool to know more about yourself.
